Graduate Student Council Survey & Newsletter

Greetings and Happy Wednesday!

Attached is the EPE GSC Newsletter for September. In it, you will find information about upcoming events.

Also, please complete our fall survey (link below). It should take 5-10 minutes and will give us a better idea of what events everyone is interested in and when to schedule them. It also gives you an opportunity to offer anonymous feedback to the department and the GSC about any concerns you may have regarding your graduate school experience.

Thank you!

Program Overview

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship Program is an interdisciplinary training program that helps early-stage doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences formulate doctoral dissertation research proposals. The program seeks students with an interest in learning how their proposals can be strengthened through exposure to the theories, literatures, methods, and intellectual traditions of disciplines outside their own. To that end, the program offers workshops, exploratory summer research, and writing opportunities guided by faculty mentorship and peer review.

Fellowship Terms

Fall workshop in Cambridge, MA

Fellows must attend spring and fall workshops led by experienced faculty. The spring workshop prepares fellows to undertake summer exploratory research, while the fall workshop helps fellows draw lessons from their summer research experiences and develop their dissertation and funding proposals. Fellows must also conduct at least 6 weeks of summer research and refine drafts of their proposals through an online and interactive writing platform in preparation for the fall workshop.

Students may apply for up to $5,000 to cover summer research costs. Travel and accommodations to attend both workshops, as well as most meals, are covered by the DPDF Program.

Eligibility

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship is open to pre-ABD doctoral students who are enrolled in PhD programs at accredited universities within the United States. Students in the humanities, social sciences, and related disciplines are welcome to apply.  For more information on eligibility and selection criteria, please visit our website.

Welcome Back from the EPE Graduate Student Council [FIXED]

[Apologies for formatting issues and this subsequent second email, but it should be easier to read now. Please delete the previous email.]

Welcome Back, EPErs!

We hope that you've had a wonderful summer. Here are a couple of upcoming events for September and October. We look to host a few more events pending feedback from graduate students.

Welcome Back Dinner
Friday, September 12 at 6 PM; Mellow Mushroom on Upper St. (about a block from Taylor)

We are welcoming back all of the EPE graduate students and invite our incoming students for an opportunity to sit down and talk about the types of events you would like to see the Graduate Student Council host this school year. This will be our first informal outing of the semester – we hope to have one dinner a month through December.

Mock Conference

Friday, October 3, All Day; Taylor Room 122.

Be sure to attend our mock conference on Friday, October 3. This is a great opportunity to practice class presentations, or to get peer feedback on thesis or dissertation topics. We will have information about signing up for presentation times soon.

As always, we encourage you to join our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1418670265028037/) in order to stay up to date on the exciting events going on in the college and with EPE GSC. If you want to get involved with GSC, please contact either Jessica Horohov (jessica.horohov@uky.edu) or Sheryl Means (s.f.means@uky.edu).

Hope to see you all soon at one of our events!

PS: There is availability for on-campus study space in Taylor 131 during normal school hours; simply check the calendar across from Judy's desk (EPE Business Manager) for times, and ask Judy if you wish to reserve it ahead of time for a meeting.
