KUDOS- Dr. Kenny Royal

Big congratulations to Dr. Kenny Royal! Dr. Royal is one of our EPE alumi and an adjunct faculty member in the department. He has just accepted an offer from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he will serve as the Director of Evaluation for the Office of Medical Education in the School of Medicine, and will have an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Family Medicine.

Not that rankings matter, but UNC's School of Medicine is #2 in the nation, and their Department of Family Medicine is #1. This offer represents a tremendous opportunity for Kenny, and the department wishes him much success with his new appointment.

UK's Phi Kappa Phi Chapter Awarded Literacy Grant

KUDOS to EPE's Heather Davis for her successful contribution to development of a literacy grant for UK's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.  According to UKNOW:

"The 'Healing through Reading' project is a nine month, self-care book club for women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence and living in a safe house. The project aims to assist women by improving their literacy skills and providing a space for residents to connect and discuss monthly book topics that include domestic violence, unhealthy relationships, isolation and self-empowerment. In addition, children’s books are provided for residents to read to their children.

The project is a collaborative effort between UK Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) and the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program.  In addition to receipt of the award for the book club, the 'Healing through Reading Project' will be featured in the winter edition of the Phi Kappa Phi Forum, 'a multidisciplinary quarterly that enlightens, challenges and entertains its diverse readers, serves as a general-interest publication as well as a platform for The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi'.”

More information about the project can be found here.

Spring Kudos

Congratulations to Dr. Kate Akers and Dr. Jarrod Tippets on successfully defending their dissertations last week!

And Kudos to Dr. Jim Cousins on his new faculty position at Western Michigan University.  Dr. Thelin writes:

"I am pleased to report that Jim Cousins (who received his PhD in Higher Education in December) has accepted a new appointment -- tenure-track faculty member and Director of Undergraduate Studies" for the Department
of History at Western Michigan University.

Jim entered our PhD program with an MA in History from UK and professional experience as an academic advisor for Arts & Sciences and, during the past year, as a grants specialist with the UKRF.

Jim's PhD dissertation dealt with original archival research that has prompted a re-thinking of the character of Transylvania University during its heroic, famous period of the early 19th century."

Well done everyone...and more kudos to come as we enter the exam season!
