"Preparing for changes in Indonesian Higher Education:  Outsiders inside an international development project"

Indonesia’s higher education system is moving from a highly centralized to a less centralized system in which universities, colleges and polytechnics will have more leeway to make their own curricular, personnel and policy decisions and in which they will also have to assume more fiscal

responsibilities.   They are being charged with contributing to local and

national development, improving access and equity for students, and striving for recognition in the regional and international higher education arenas.  Sound familiar?

In preparation for these transitions, the Indonesian government sought development aid from a variety of external sources, among these the U.S. Agency for International Development.  This colloquium focuses on lessons learned since Spring 2012, when Drs. Turner and Goldstein began work as consultants to the resultant Indonesia Higher Education Leadership and Management project funded by U.S. A.I.D.

A panel discussion and Q&A session moderated by Dr. Neal Hutchens of UK’s Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, a legislative fellow on the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, features panelists from UK’s Anthropology department including Dr. Hsain Ilahiane, formerly a Senior Researcher at Intel, and Dr. Susan Abbott-Jamieson, former Senior Social Scientist in National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) in the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  We also welcome two Chemistry PhDs, Dr. James Tanner and Dr. John Bauer, who have worked for the FDA and Abbott Labs, respectively, as well as a recent graduate from the biomedical sciences working in Illinois. 

This is your opportunity to learn about your career options outside of faculty positions, and to hear from those who have forged the way.

Join the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation as we welcome Dr. Marco Pitzalis, a faculty member visiting from the University of Cagliari, Italy. Dr. Pitzalis will lead a discussion titled "Struggling for excellence. The reform of University in Europe: the cases of France and Italy" on Thursday, October 18th at 5:30 PM in room 109 Dickey Hall, on the UK campus.

Pescosolido Discusses Social Issues in Health, Illness, and Healing

UK's Quantitative Initiative for Policy and Social Research (QIPSR) is co-sponsoring a series of talks by Dr. Bernice Pescosolido (Indiana University) this Thursday and Friday.

“Integrating Theoretical, Methodological & Policy Concerns in the Research Agenda on the Stigma of Mental Illness” will be discussed on Thursday, September 20th from 4-5:15 PM it the Presidents’ Room of the Singletary Center.

“Connecting Complexities: Examining Issues in Health, Illness, and Health Care Through Networks”  will be presented Friday, September 21th from 1PM-2:15 PM at the Marksbury Building Theater (Rose St.).

Bernice Pescosolido is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Indiana University and Director of the Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research. She has focused her research and teaching on social issues in health, illness, and healing. She has served on advisory agenda-setting efforts at the NIMH, NCI, NHLBI, NIDRR, OBSSR and presented at congressional briefings. Her current research uses survey research and social network analysis to study stigma towards children with mental health problems in 18 countries. Professor Pescosolido has received numerous grants from federal and private sources and a number of awards for a distinguished career.

Target Audience: Students, new faculty, or staff who plan to conduct human subject research but are unfamiliar with the regulatory requirements and submission process for IRB review.

Registration is required as group size is limited to accommodate questions and discussion.

Electronic Dissertation Submissions

The Office of Academic Services in the Graduate School is sponsoring a series of informational sessions on submitting the electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) electronically.

There is and has been a movement in higher education to move away from the paper submission of these documents to the electronic submission. The advantages of the electronic submission are numerous (increased visibility, improved presentation, world-wide access, lower printing and copying cost, and increased attention to the student’s work). The submission guide can be found here.

Interested students are encouraged to attend one of the sessions listed below:

Given the increased dialogue across Geography and the Humanities, the work of Henri Lefebvre offers a way forward for interdisciplinary scholarship centered on the city. Taxi driver, intellectual godfather of 1968, urban revolutionary, Marxist philosopher, spatial theorist, critic of everyday life, cultural critic, and even pedagogue—Lefebvre articulates an urban thinking that changes how we approach cities and urbanized consciousness in (graphic) novels, films, music, videogames and more.
