Consulting Job Opportunity for PhD Students

From EPE alum, Kayla:

I have been doing some consulting work with an organization called Thrival Academies. Thrival is looking to start another project that looks at the impact of international experiences on pre-service teachers. Since I am already on a project for them (looking at impacts of study abroad on high schoolers), they've asked me if I could put them in contact with other PhD students who could do similar work. They want someone who could spend some time getting to know the org (via phone interviews with leaders and the like) and construct an assessment tool that evaluates learning growth that aligns with their identified SLOs.

If you (or maybe you know somebody who) would be interested in pursuing a consulting job like this (for pay), I can provide some more info and put you in contact with the people at Thrival. Just let me know! And feel free to send this through the listserv!

All my love to Kentucky!

Congrats to EPE students and alumni

The EdD in EPE cohorts were well represented at this spring's KCTCS New Horizons Conference.  Alyssa Young (EPSE-Cohort 1) won a systemwide award for excellence in staff administration.  Bonita Tyler (Cohort 3), Mason Tudor (Cohort 2), and Karen Hlinka (Cohort 1) all won awards for excellence on their respective campuses.  And Mark Hundley (Cohort 1) was recognized for his excellent work at the system office.  Kudos to you all!

Kudos!

Congratulations to Dr. Mike Rosenberg on his successful defense last week.  His dissertation, Generational Differences in Transfer Capital Among Community College Students, adds to our knowledge of differences among older students in navigating the transfer pathway.  Mike is the first of EdD Cohort Two to make it to the finish line...well done!

And Kudos to Dr. Laura Wyly who defended her dissertation, Gender Discrimination and Title IX Implementation: Lessons From the Office for Civil Rights Resolution Letters 1997-2011, yesterday afternoon.  Ripped from the headlines, Laura's work helps us understand the social construction of gender discrimination and the changing environment for higher education institutions seeking to provide safe climates for students to learn.  Thanks to Neal Hutchens for calling in yet again from Pennsylvania...we miss you Neal.

And be looking for great work from Robert Hayes in the coming year as he begins his dissertation study examining the relationships between independent and county high schools and their Appalachian communities.  Robert successfully passed his qualification exam for doctoral candidacy last week.

It's a wonderful time in the EPE neighborhood.  Kudos to all!

You're Invited!

Hello and Happy New Year!

Our 3rd cohort of EdD in EPE students will be starting their doctoral journey January 16th.  Please join us in greeting them at the Bingham Davis House of the Gaines Center 6-8pm, Friday, January 16th.  Directions are below.

The EdD in EPE cohort program is designed for doctoral students from across the state interested in post-secondary policy and practice.  This is the third cohort.  We had 18 graduates from our first group and 9 students are currently making their way through the dissertation process from the second.  The cohort comes together once a month for five meetings per semester and again twice in the summer.  So you have to catch them when their in town!

The second date is also on a Friday evening.  Jim Savage, recent graduate of the UK History department, will be giving a talk on his experiences with conducting oral history interviews with members of the KCTCS administration.  This interview collection will be used by Richard Angelo's students this spring in EPE690 The Community College.  The colloquium is currently scheduled for Friday, February 6th at the Bingham Davis House.  More details will be provided. Save the date.

We hope to see you on these coming winter Friday evenings.  Stay tuned for details.

Jane
