First Generation Student Specialist & Collegium

The First Generation Specialist will work collaboratively with both the Office of Academic Services and Residence Life under the close direction of our Coordinator of First Year Programs to facilitate and implement a social modeling program that integrates the academic, residential, and labor related aspects of the student experience at Berea.

Responsibilities:
This position will develop the groundwork, material, training, and processes related to the establishment of a program to increase the success rates of first generation students with particular emphasis on students from Appalachian Regional Commission designated “distressed” counties. This position is a two-year appointment with no expectation of continuation of this position thereafter. Special attention will be given to opportunities to integrate academic services and support into the student residential experience and to collaborate with Labor and Student life programming. The Specialist will serve as a Collegium member, live in a residence hall, and supervise the operation of this hall under the supervision of the Director of Residence Life.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate for this position will have the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; Masters Degree preferred; 3-5 years of related experience in higher education working with first-generation college students. Work with students from Appalachian Regional Commission designated “distressed” counties and other areas with low college attainment rates and high economic challenge is preferred; special skills, knowledge, and abilities: leadership ability in program development. Strong written and oral communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills. Detail orientation. Familiarity with research on and higher education programs related to academic success and first generation students. Understanding of the cultural and education background and needs of students from areas with low college attainment rates and high economic challenge. Deep and genuine commitment to work directly with students to facilitate their development, provide educational opportunity, and foster academic engagement and success. Ability to work effectively with faculty, with professional colleagues in Student Life, Admissions, and Academic Services area, and with students. Familiarity with emerging retention software and technologies related to student tracking and interventions is preferred. Familiarity with the issues and challenges of first-generation college students.

Additional Information:
This position is a two-year appointment with no expectation of continuation of this position thereafter. Living in a residence hall is an expectation of this position.
