Hanan Ashrawi lecture at UK

A free public lecture featuring Palestinian activist Hanan Ashrawi has been scheduled for the evening of March 23, 2010 at the Singletary Center for the Arts.

Ashrawi has served as an elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Jerusalem District. In 2009, she was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), making history as the first woman to hold a seat in this executive body. Ashrawi’s academic career spanned several decades in which she served as a faculty member, chair in the Department of English and Dean of the Faculty at Birzeit University on the West Bank. From 1991 through 1993, she served as the official spokesperson of the Palestinian Delegation to the Middle East Peace Process and a member of both the Leadership/Guidance and Executive Committees of the Delegation.

With the signing of the peace accords by Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin in 1993 and the establishment of Palestinian self-rule, Ashrawi headed the Preparatory Committee of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens' Rights in Jerusalem, and was the founder and commissioner general of that committee until 1995. From 1996 through 1998, she served as minister of higher education and research. In August of 1998, she founded the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH), and has served as the Executive Committee chairperson of that organization since that time.

While the lecture is free and open to the public, tickets must be reserved in advance of the event.  Faculty may contact Richard Greissman (859.257.2471 or for information about group seating for their classes.

Students may obtain tickets through the Singletary Center Ticket Office or by going to the SCFA website . No phone orders accepted. There is a limit of FOUR tickets per person using the SCFA website.

Critical Education call for essays

The editors of Critical Education are pleased to announce our second editorial series. This current series will focus on the articulation of race, schools, and segregation, and will analyze the extent to which schooling may or may not be returning to a state of educational apartheid.

Series editors Adam Renner (from Louisville, KY) and Doug Selwyn (formerly of Seattle, WA) invite essays that treat any questions that seek clarity regarding race, education, schooling, and social justice. We seek essays that explore the history of segregation, desegregation, and affirmative action in the US and abroad. While we certainly invite empirical/quantitative research regarding these issues, we also welcome more qualitative studies, as well as philosophical/theoretical work, which provide deep explorations of these phenomena. We especially invite narratives from parents or students who have front line experience of segregation and/or educational apartheid. Additionally, and importantly, we seek essays of resistance, which document the struggle for racial justice in particular locales and/or suggestions for how we might wrestle toward more equitable schooling for all children.

Please visit the Critical Education website for submission criteria: www.criticaleducation.org. Also feel free to contact the series editors, Adam Renner (arenner@bellarmine.edu) or Doug Selwyn (dselw001@plattsburgh.edu) with any questions.

Teachers Who Made a Difference

The UK College of Education and UK basketball great Kyle Macy are proud to announce
they are accepting submissions for the 12th annual Teachers Who Made a Difference
Program. This program gives individuals the opportunity to thank the teachers,
principals, college professors and other educators who have inspired and motivated
them to succeed.

The program does not select winners from a pool of nominees. Rather, the UK College
of Education created the program to provide individuals a means to express thanks to
educators who have impacted their lives. The number of honorees to be recognized is
limited. Nominees can be from anywhere in the world and do not have to be affiliated
with UK. Organizers ask that nominators limit recognitions to one teacher per year.

To honor a teacher, visit the UK College of Education's Web site at
www.education.uky.edu/Community/TWMAD and complete the online form. The deadline for
submissions is March 8, 2010.

For more information, contact Sarah Mulholland at sarah.mulholland@uky.edu or via
phone at 859-257-2666.
